What aspects of the treatment can account for its success? What works in psychodynamic psychotherapy with adolescents? There is growing empirical support for the effectiveness of psychodynamic psychotherapy for adolescents, particularly in treating depression. More and more high-quality quantitative studies, including randomized controlled trials, are demonstrating its value. But psychodynamic approaches vary and many factors are at play. What aspects of the treatment can account for its success? This journal article presents findings from a series of in-depth interviews with adolescents enrolled in a 28-week online program of psychodynamic psychotherapy. The interviews reveal a number of factors that predict successful treatment and give us a deeper understanding of adolescents’ experience of the process. 

 

Authors and Instructor for What Works in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy With Adolescents?

The research was conducted as part of a Norwegian study on psychodynamic psychotherapy with adolescents. The article is authored by André Løvgren and Jan Ivar Røssberg of the Division of Mental Health and Addiction, Oslo University Hospital and University of Oslo, Institute of Clinical Medicine; Liv Nilsen of the Division of Mental Health and Addiction, Oslo University Hospital; Eivind Engebretsen of the University of Oslo, Institute of Health and Society; and Randi Ulberg of both the University of Oslo, Institute of Clinical Medicine and Vestfold Hospital Trust, Division of Mental Health, Research Unit.

The article was selected by Dr. Marylie Gerson. Dr. Gerson received her PhD in Psychology from Princeton University and is both an experimental social psychologist and clinical psychologist. She is Psychology Professor Emeritus at California Lutheran University and combines teaching and research with an active clinical practice.
