Yes. All of our courses provide psychology CE credits. The Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
Our experience is that many licensing boards recognize continuing education courses offered by organizations approved the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Because licensing regulations and institutional requirements vary, we recommend that you check with your own board or institution if you have any questions about their requirements.
In the United States, continuing education is often referred to as CE (continuing education). In many other countries, similar professional learning activities are described as CPD (continuing professional development). The Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies offers online learning opportunities that support both continuing education and continuing professional development for psychologists and other mental health professionals worldwide.
While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they measure training time differently. The number of CE credits earned for a course coincides with actual clock hours of instruction. One CE credit equals 1 hour of learning. Most US state boards for psychologists, social workers, and counselors require a specific number of hours (e.g., 35 hours every 2 years) of continuing education. One CEU is equal to 10 contact hours or 10 CE credits.
Absolutely. Although our continuing education programs are developed primarily for doctoral-level psychologists and mental health professionals, we do not restrict access to our courses. Researchers, students, and others with an interest in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and related areas often find the courses valuable as well. Yes. We welcome international students as well as those residing in the United States.
Courses include self-paced audio, video, and guided reading formats. Audio courses include a full written transcript of the material and list of references for additional exploration. Individual course descriptions explain the format used for each course.

Each continuing education (CE) credit is designed to take 1 hour to complete. So a one-credit course would take approximately 1 hour and an eight-hour course would take 8 hours, etc. Course descriptions include the CE credits earned by each course. Our courses range from 1 to 8 CE credits in length and you may pace yourself at your convenience.
Yes. Our courses are designed to provide meaningful educational value for clinicians with varying levels of prior psychoanalytic training. Some courses introduce foundational concepts, while others explore more advanced clinical and theoretical topics.
Each course is followed by a multiple choice test, which gives immediate corrective feedback so that the test can be part of the learning process as well. APA requires a passing score of 75% and each test may be taken up to three times if needed.
As soon as you’ve passed a test, you’ll have access to your certificate of course completion, which may be downloaded or printed then or later at your convenience.
A certificate of course completion is immediately downloadable following the completion of each course. The certificate shows the participant’s name, name of the course, number of CE credits earned, date of course completion, and our name and CE sponsor status.
Certainly! Even after courses are completed, you will retain access to your course library and certificates.
Simply email the Director with your intention to pursue the psychoanalytic psychology certificate program. You may do so at any time during the process, whether it’s at the start of the courses or after you’ve taken several. And there’s no obligation if you change your mind.
You’re just required to complete 48 CE credits of our psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy courses, including at least three core courses (Classical Psychoanalytic Theory, Ego Psychology, Object Relations Theory, Personality Disorders from a Psychoanalytic Perspective, and Psychodynamics of the Therapeutic Relationship). You may complete them at your convenience and take them in the order that best suits your needs.
The Certificate of Advanced Study in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy consists of 48 CE credits in our psychoanalytic courses. You may pace yourself at your convenience. You may proceed as quickly as you wish and you have a full 3 years to complete it.

The Certificate of Advanced Study in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy allows you to organize and document advanced continuing education in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Many clinicians find that pursuing a structured program deepens their theoretical understanding, strengthens clinical thinking, and demonstrates sustained professional development. Because licensing regulations and institutional requirements vary, participants should consult their own boards or institutions regarding how coursework may apply professionally.
None at all! Just take the required coursework and let us know when you’ve completed it.
Simply email the Director through our contact form to have your transcript reviewed and certificate prepared. The Director will verify with you exactly how you’d like your name to appear on the certificate, your current mailing address, etc. The certificate then will take approximately 10 days to prepare. You’ll be emailed to let you know when it’s been mailed and provided with a photo and scanned copy of the certificate for your electronic records.
Absolutely! Many of our program participants are international.
This certificate is designed to provide you with advanced education in psychoanalytic theory and psychoanalytic approaches to psychotherapy. It is not intended to replace formal psychoanalytic training programs, which in many regions involve additional requirements such as supervised clinical experience, personal analysis, and several years of specialized study. Because the use of the title psychoanalyst varies internationally, you are responsible for understanding the professional standards and regulations that apply to your own region. You may accurately state that you have completed the Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies’ Certificate of Advanced Study in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
At this time, we do not offer scholarships or financial aid. However, we have intentionally kept our tuition as affordable as possible. Our fees have remained unchanged for more than 20 years and currently average less than $15 per continuing education credit. You may enroll in individual courses to fit your professional development goals, schedule, and budget.
