Psychodynamic psychotherapy with children and adolescents has a growing evidence base. Many clinicians would say that psychodynamic psychotherapy is an effective approach, but what is the empirical evidence? The number and quality of studies assessing its effectiveness are growing rapidly and they are demonstrating its usefulness in treating a wide range of disorders and presenting problems in young people. Midgley and colleagues have conducted several systematic reviews on the topic, culminating most recently in this journal article (2021).

 

Authors and Instructor for Evidence Base for Psychodynamic Psychotherapy With Children and Adolescents

The article is authored by Nick Midgley and Antonella Cirasola, of the University College London and the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families; Rose Mortimer and Prisha Batra, also of the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families; and Eilis Kennedy, of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, London, United Kingdom. The current paper represents many years of synthesizing research evidence on the psychodynamic approach with young people, including two previous systematic reviews in 2011 and 2017.

The article was selected by Dr. Marylie Gerson. Dr. Gerson received her PhD in Psychology from Princeton University and is both an experimental social psychologist and clinical psychologist. She is Psychology Professor Emeritus at California Lutheran University and combines teaching and research with an active clinical practice. The course begins with a brief video synopsis and preliminary discussion of the article by Dr. Gerson.
