Description
Object Relations Theory
This CE course on Object Relations Theory may be applied to our Certificate of Advanced Study in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy if desired and would count as a core course in the program. The course presents the foundations of object relations theory. The theory reflects a perspective of psychoanalysis that emphasizes the significance of the interpersonal experience on the development of mind and character. This perspective examines the critical significance of human relationships for normal development, the processes whereby the mind is formed from those relationships, the intricacy of specialized ego functions, and the evolution of the person as a unique and adaptive being. Object relations theory serves to move psychoanalysis beyond economic, structural, and genetic considerations, and toward an appreciation for systemic interactions between persons, and the symbolizing of those interactions within the person.
This introductory course begins with the work of Melanie Klein and contrasts her views with those of Sigmund Freud. Then, it discusses the views of W. R. D. Fairbairn, Michael Balint, D. W. Winnicott, and Harry Guntrip, and their conceptualizations of intrapsychic development.
