The online course Couch or Face-to-Face Seating in Psychoanalysis? consists of reading Önen Ünsalver et al.’s 2021 open-access article, “The Changeable Positioning of the Couch and Repositioning to Face-to-Face Arrangement in Psychoanalysis to Facilitate the Experience of Being Seen.” The authors examine traditional couch seating in psychoanalysis in relation to research on eye contact, arousal, emotion, and interpersonal experience. Drawing on neurobiological research and object relations perspectives, the article considers how couch and face-to-face arrangements may serve different therapeutic needs and circumstances.
